Volunteers

Marrickville Legal Centre could not provide accessible legal services to the community without the assistance of our wonderful team of volunteers. While the work can be challenging, it is highly rewarding, and a way for solicitors, students, seconded court support workers and others to provide a valuable contribution to the community.

PLT Program

Marrickville Legal Centre has a Practical Legal Training (PLT) program, in which students are supervised by solicitors and develop important skills prior to admission as a lawyer in New South Wales.

PLT students assist with client intake, give legal information and referral, assist with casework, and perform other administrative tasks in a community legal setting.

When applying for a PLT placement your application must address the following selection criteria:

  • An understanding of, and a commitment to, social justice, including access to legal services for people from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Capacity to complete at least 60 days of PLT placement with Marrickville Legal Centre, attending at least 2 days per week.

Positions become available from time-to-time.

If you would like to express your interest in a PLT position, please fill out the PLT Application Form.

What do front desk volunteers do?

Front desk volunteers provide legal support to the caseworkers at the Centre in the following ways:

1. Legal Information and referrals

Volunteers are responsible for staffing the front desk and responding to the requests of the public, other workers, and clients.

As volunteers, you will be a source of information and referrals to people who come into contact with the Centre, either over the telephone or face-to-face. Volunteers will be required to ascertain the nature of enquiries, provide information about available options to clients, and make appropriate referrals.

2. Other duties

Volunteers will also be required to assist with general administrative and reception work – such as answering the telephones, delivering or collecting documents, faxing, photocopying and data entry. Volunteers can expect to build up skills in public contact, assisting people in crisis, and casework file maintenance, as well as increasing their knowledge of referral services, the practical application of the law, and its constraints.

What times can I volunteer?

Front desk assistants can volunteer for one of the Centre’s daytime shifts.

Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 1.00pm, or 2.00pm to 5.00pm.

Volunteer shifts will begin after training.

What level of commitment is required?

The Centre requires front desk assistants to volunteer for one daytime shift (either in the morning or afternoon) on a weekly basis, for a minimum of six months.

Marrickville Legal Centre Training

Successful candidates will also be asked to attend a small group training session that will cover:

  • The services provided by Marrickville Legal Centre
  • Office protocols and expectations of volunteers
  • Using Centre resources such as computer databases

You will then be added to a standby register, and will begin at the Centre on a rolling basis as vacancies arise. There will be more intensive training on some of our individual departments in the future. Many volunteers will have already commenced their regular shifts before this training occurs.

To apply, please fill out our Daytime Volunteer Application Form.

Evening Volunteers

Evening Volunteers

Evening Volunteers

Marrickville Legal Centre operates three evening advice sessions each week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The sessions run from 6.30pm and finish around 9pm.

The Centre provides the advice to local residents on the following areas:

General Law Clinic: Advice on civil law and minor criminal matters.

Employment Law Clinic: Advice is provided by solicitors with experience in employment law.

Family Law Clinic: Advice is provided on Family Law matters involving children and/or family violence.

Evening advice sessions are staffed by our volunteer solicitors and legal assistants and are supervised by a solicitor from Marrickville Legal Centre. Most of our volunteers attend on a fortnightly basis but some attend monthly.

Orientation

Before being placed on the roster volunteers are required to attend to observe evening advice sessions in order to gain practical experience on the types of matters dealt with and the way in which out clinic operates.

Training Sessions

Occasionally throughout the year we run training sessions for new volunteers. These sessions provide an introduction to the work of MLC, the operation of the evening clinics and expectations of volunteers and practical tips for volunteers.

If you can complete and return the expression of interest form below we will contact you when the next round of training sessions are scheduled.

We are not able to guarantee a place on the roster immediately. Sometimes we have greater demand than places available. Those volunteers who are able to meet the criteria but who are not immediately offered a place on the roster will be placed on a waiting list and contacted once a place becomes available.

To apply, fill out our Evening Volunteer Application Form.
