Volunteers are the lifeblood of Marrickville Legal Centre – their dedication enables us to connect even more people in the community to justice. Volunteers need to be celebrated now more than ever, which is why we’re bringing back Vollie Vox!
This month we’re celebrating Stella Milton, who first started volunteering at MLC back in March 2025. Stella has been “stellar” in her role as Client Intake Officer and has been nominated for recognition due to her commitment and willingness to learn.
What inspired you to start volunteering at MLC, and what keeps you coming back?
I started volunteering because I was interested in the intersection between law and social justice, and I was looking to gain some hands-on experience alongside my university studies. What has kept me coming back to MLC is the friendly and supportive environment created by everyone in the team (and the MLC pets, who come to visit us in the office!)
How do you feel your role makes a difference for our clients and community?
I think that being the first person someone speaks to, when seeking assistance with a legal issue they’re experiencing, is a really important role. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to connect clients with appropriate services and solicitors, and to provide some tangible support and reassurance as they navigate an often complicated and overwhelming legal system.
What skills have you gained while volunteering at MLC?
I’ve learnt a lot about how to communicate clearly, identify key issues, and translate complex legal concepts into accessible language. I’ve also gained a much greater understanding of a broad range of practice areas, including employment, crime, family, and tenancy, thanks to the guidance of the supervisors and solicitors.
What’s something that surprised you when you first started volunteering at MLC?
One thing that surprised me was how easy it was to make friends with other volunteers. I expected to gain practical experience, but I was pleasantly surprised by how collaborative the environment is at MLC.
How would you describe MLC to someone thinking about getting involved?
MLC is a really rewarding place to volunteer. It’s been a great opportunity to work in a supportive and professional team, and have a genuine positive impact on my local community.
