Meet Rahman*, who was just 17 when he found himself alone, without income, and without a safe place to sleep overnight. 

When violence at home escalated suddenly, Rahman was forced to leave for his own safety. Police became involved, charges were laid against his parents, and Rahman lost both his home and his support network. 

Despite being in school and trying to build a future for himself, Rahman wasn’t eligible for Youth Allowance because he was a New Zealand citizen. With no income and nowhere else to go, he began sleeping rough. 

When Rahman came to Marrickville Legal Centre (MLC), he was exhausted, frightened, and unsure of what options he had. Our team stepped in to help him navigate a complex legal situation, including securing Australian citizenship, a process made even more difficult as his parents’ signatures were required. 

Thanks to MLC’s patient advocacy and support, Rahman was finally granted Australian citizenship. He now lives in public housing, has access to counselling, and has received victims’ compensation.
